WHEN Keith Baker encouraged his son to take up cycling he never imagined that just a year later the teenager would complete a 100-mile charity ride.
But that is exactly what Matthew Baker from Chandler's Ford has achieved.
He joined more than 2,000 other riders for the Wessex 100 Cycle Ride - and raised more than £400 for Southampton based charity Leukaemia Busters.
Matthew, 14, a pupil at Toynbee School, was the only teenager to take part in the gruelling slog that started and finished in Salisbury. He rode alongside his dad and completed the course in just ten hours.
Matthew, of Greendale Close, said: "It was a really enjoyable experience. I am definitely going to do it again next year.
"There were lots of hills and headwinds so it was tough and I was tired afterwards but it was great."
Matthew's enthusiasm for the sport blossomed after he joined Solent Race Team based in Hursley Road, Chandler's Ford, along with his dad.
He said: "It's a great club and they really encourage you. I'm setting my sights on a ride from Land's End to John O'Groats next."
Proud dad, Keith, 47, has cycled from Land's End to John O'Groats himself for Leukaemia Busters.
He said: "He received a great deal of encouragement from other riders both at the start and during the ride. I'm so proud of him."
Solent Race Team is looking for more young recruits to join their cycling club. Ring 023 8026 6212 for more information.
