THE godfather and icon of acid jazz, Roy Ayers, will be reworking his classic tunes with the help of The African Jazz Allstars at The Anvil on Thursday, September 30.

The stunning jazz vibist has worked with some of the biggest names since the 1960s.

He began writing his own material and was soon snapped up by his first record label, United Artists.

A string of hits followed and, by the mid-1970s, Roy's mix of fluent improvisation, dance-floor-friendly rhythms and incredible showmanship, quickly established him as a leader of the new jazz funk scene.

Roy (pictured) formed his own record label, Uno Melodic, in 1983, which has given rise to a number of top artistes.

Thanks to the emerging worldwide Acid Jazz movement, Roy enjoyed a renaissance in the early 1990s and, since then, has won numerous awards for his contribution to music.

The African Jazz Allstars will help ensure a fantastic evening, with irresistible African grooves and exuberant jazz solos to create a sound that sizzles.

Starting at 7.45pm, expect to find the music to be full of rhythmic tension, interwoven with guitar parts and jazzy brass.

Tickets cost £15.50 and £17.50 with £3 off for concessions.
