A FIRE which severely damaged a derelict building in Southampton is not being treated as suspicious.
Six fire engines from Totton, Redbridge, St Mary's and Hightown and about 30 firefighters were sent to tackle the blaze at the Old Lancaster Steel Works in Third Avenue, off Millbrook Road West, on Monday night.
The fire was already well established when firefighters arrived on the scene at 7.40pm.
It was initially thought that the building could have contained acetylene cylinders, which may have necessitated evacuation of people within a 200m perimeter of the fire. But this was soon discovered not to be the case.
The unit was severely damaged, while adjacent units sustained partial damage.
Third Avenue was closed and smoke billowed out across Millbrook as the aerial platform was used to bring the blaze under control.
The cause of the fire is unknown but it is not being treated as suspicious and details have not been passed on to the police.
