TODAY the Daily Echo can expose the disturbing lack of security in our schools.
In the week when a pupil was attacked in a playground by an intruder, we can reveal how security is worryingly inadequate at many schools across our area.
A team of reporters visited 40 schools to see just how far they could roam without being questioned. The results were staggering. We found:
l At 75 per cent of schools, we gained simple entry to playgrounds.
l Reporters were rarely challenged by staff as they mingled with children.
l And in almost a third of schools, we were able to get into school buildings, including classrooms, sports halls and toilets
During one visit a reporter was able to walk through a packed playground, enter the school corridors and open doors into classrooms, toilets and a staff room.
In another, a reporter was directed via the sports hall changing rooms. At neither school did an adult approach reporters.
On Tuesday a 12-year-old boy was attacked in the playground of Alderman Quilley school at Eastleigh by an intruder who simply walked through the gates.
The schools surveyed by the Daily Echo have not been identified to protect them, but our findings will be sent to education chiefs.
Southampton City Council said today it would work with schools to review any security breaches drawn to its attention and increase security where necessary.
