WHITCHURCH fell at the first hurdle of the FA Vase on Saturday after a second-half comeback inspired by Sidlesham player-manager Joe Laidlaw.

Laidlaw, 54, clocked up more than 450 pro appearances in a career that took in Middlesbrough, Carlisle, Doncaster, Portsmouth, Hereford and Mansfield - and ended in 1982.

His arrival on the pitch, half-an-hour from the end, turned around a lacklustre game that looked to be drifting in the home side's favour.
