JOAN Penfold produced two convincing performances to become Hampshire's unbadged singles champion at Banister Park.

In the semi-finals the Atherley member swept aside Jean Philip (Pyestock) 21-9 and she dealt with her final opponent just as competently, scoring a 21-10 success against Carol Martin (Southbourne).

Martin had qualified 21-14 against Beryl Faithfull (Pembroke Gardens).

Atherley also claimed the county's benevolent triples in a competition completed at Whitchurch after being started and halted by rain last month at Banister Park.

In the final Jean Arnaud, Jackie Farmer and Marion Collins overcame Hook 15-10, the Atherley trio having disposed of semi-final opponents Maureen Robertson, Pauline Harris and Beryl Nuttall (Kings Park, Bournemouth) 17-13.

Hook (Jean Hallier, Muriel Sadler and Dawn Sanders) had squeezed through their semi-final 14-12 against Crofton (Sandy Moyse, Cindy Ellis and Pat Rye).

The scores in every round that Atherley played will be compared with those of the winners from all other counties in England to determine the national winners.

Last year the national winners were the Whitchurch threesome of Diane Timms, Paula Rowntree and Rosemary Corney.

Allyson Flint, who reached the national fours semi-final at Royal Leamington Spa this summer, carried off the Hampshire secretaries'/treasurers' title at Banister Park.

Like the other events, this was abandoned through flooded greens last month and, when it resumed at Banister Park, several bowlers were unable to play because of work and holiday commitments.

Flint had a quarter-final walk-over before beating Sylvia Burrows (Headley) 21-15 in the semi-final. The Cove skip took the trophy 21-7 against Hampshire secretary Cynthia Abraham.

Burrows had been given a walk-over in the quarter-final by Pat Whiffen (Southampton Women).
