Totton and Eling captured their first ever trophy in the annual New Forest Women's BA Championships, thanks to Celia Bryant and Barbara Willsher.

Playing in finals day at Braeside - home club of NFWBA president Pat Shepherd - the pair, pictured right, carried off the Cox's two-wood pairs after a roller coaster tussle with Ann Coles and Hazel Ford of Lymington.

Ahead 9-5 at nine ends, Totton and Eling lost the next five to trail 13-9 after 14. Bryant and Willsher responded by taking the next three for a 14-13 lead, but it was all square on the 18th before they knuckled down to land their 17-15 victory.

What with this triumph as well as running away with the New Forest WBA C League title and winning promotion from the Southampton and District WBA C League, it has been a memorable summer for Totton and Eling.

Lyndhurst's Liz Russell - winner of the singles Championship two years ago - regained her title 21-18 against Jean Hudson of Downton.

Russell looked like winning comfortably after building an 11-1 advantage at eight ends but Hudson cut the deficit to 17-15 until the Lyndhurst bowler sealed matters.

Holder and former Braeside bowler Doris Johnson will be kicking herself after letting the Champion of Champions honours slip through her fingers.

The Ringwood member led 17-7 and 20-14 but the inspiration deserted her and she fell 21-20 to the determined fightback of Val Farrant (Iford Bridge).

Tightest final of the day was the internal Waterside tussle for the two-woods crown, in which Gill Dando pipped Rita Wye 15-14 on an extra end.

After the clubmates were 10-10 at 14 ends, Wye edged 14-12 in front on the 20th, only for Dando to square matters on the next and then take the title on the sudden-death end.

Following her singles success, Russell was the one playing catch-up when she combined with Margaret Safe and Jo Griffiths for the triples. They trailed 12-2 at nine ends and though they steadily chipped away at the deficit they still lost 21-16 to Sheila Watts, Barbara Paddington and Pauline Walker of the host club.
