A 54-year-old man was killed last night - but the cause of the car accident which claimed his life is a mystery say police.
Officers are baffled as to how the rush-hour smash involving two cars on the A32 happened.
Traffic police today launched an appeal for witnesses following the incident at about 6.15pm.
The man, from Bridgemary, near Fareham, died of his injuries at the scene of the accident involving his green Peugeot 106 and a Vauxhall Frontera.
Police believe the driver of a white VW Golf travelling south had stopped to allow the Vauxhall Frontera to turn out of a driveway.
The Peugeot 106 travelling north then collided head-on with the Frontera.
Sgt Colin Hall said: "We can't fathom out why they collided head-on.
"We think the Peugeot driver would have had an opportunity to stop but we don't yet know why he didn't.
"We'll be trying to visit as many people as possible to take statements and build up a picture of what happened.
"There were quite a few witnesses at the scene but the more we can get the better."
Fareham firefighters cut the man from his car at the crash scene, between The Hoeford Inn and Geoffrey Crescent.
He is likely to be named today once members of his family have been informed of his death.
The road was shut for four hours while crash investigators examined the scene.
Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt Colin Hall at the Fareham Roads Policing Unit on 0845 045 4545.
