FROM Basin Street to Broad-way, starring Georgie Fame, is a new jazz show with seven of the finest middle-of-the-road jazz musicians to be found today.

Georgie had a string of hits, including Yeh, Yeh, Getaway and Bonnie and Clyde, all of which reached number one in the charts, and is heralded as one of Europe's best-ever jazz singers.

Born Clive Powell on June 26, 1943, in the English industrial town of Leigh, Lancashire, Georgie's interest in music initially grew out of his family entertaining in the home and musical evenings in the church hall across the street, where his father also played in an amateur dance band.

By the age of 16, he had toured Britain extensively, playing alongside Marty Wilde, Billy Fury, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Tony Sheridan, Freddie Canon, Jerry Keller, Dickie Pride, Joe Brown and many more.

During this time, Billy Fury selected four musicians, including Georgie (pictured), for his personal backing group, and the Blue Flames were born. At the end of 1961, after a disagreement, the band and Fury parted company.

In 1974, Georgie reformed the Blue Flames and they continue working with him - in one form or another - to this day.

From Basin Street to Broadway is organised by, and stars, Keith Smith - trumpeter, bandleader and international jazz star, who has been performing professionally for more than 40 years. He is the only non-American ever to work with The Louis Armstrong All Stars, touring with them for four years after Louis died.

From Basin Street to Broadway will be at The Anvil, Basingstoke, on Friday, October 1.
