Steve Wigley says he has no qualms about thrusting Fabrice Fernandes back into the spotlight against Charlton on Monday night.

The French midfielder pleaded guilty to one charge of dangerous driving at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday and was warned he could face jail when he is sentenced next month.

That would be a terrible blow for Wigley with Fernandes being arguably the club's best player so far this season.

Fernandes is already a slight doubt for Monday with a hamstring strain but Saints are optimistic he will be fit for the Sky televised clash at The Valley - and, if he is, Wigley will play him.

Wigley said: "He's definitely in contention. The other downside of Thursday was that was the day he was due to be coming back into full training.

"He's dealt with the situation well over the last two months and his performances on the pitch and training have been as good as I've ever seen.

"I'm sure he can separate that at the minute and concentrate on his football. I have no qualms about playing him as long as he is fit."

Speaking of Fernandes' upturn in form this year, Wigley added: "I think he's upped his workrate, particularly out of possession as well.

"That was one area he could always have improved and he has done.

"He's certainly the fittest I've ever seen him and, the fitter you are, the more you can display your talent.

"Sometimes, it's a myth that you get people fit just to run around - the fitter they are, the better they can display their talents and get on.

"Hopefully, Fabrice, pictured, can carry on his good form.

"When he came off after 20 minutes against Chelsea, it was a big blow to us.

"He holds the ball up for you and buys you time - I've just got to hope he comes through his ordeal OK."

With Matt Oakley, Jason Dodd, Michael Svensson, Marian Pahars and Leandre Griffit still unfit, there was some better news for Wigley, who saw his internationals come back in good health.

"I'm relieved all right," said the head coach. "We've got Darren Kenton available from the last game and Chris Baird's back in full training, so we're getting there."

Saints have so far managed only one win and three defeats from their opening four matches and Wigley added: "We need to get something out of every game.

"It's no bigger than going to Chelsea than Charlton or anywhere else, but it's important we get some points on the board.

"Charlton are a good side. They finished seventh last year and it's well documented that Alan Curbishley's a great boss.

"We'll have to be at our best to beat them."
