IT had been one of those days at the office, the clock was ticking by and just about everything seemed to be conspiring against us from ever making it to the pub for the meal we had had planned for weeks.
But determined to have a social life, it was almost 9pm by the time myself and two friends finally arrived at The Mill Arms in Dunbridge.
All three of us were famished - and desperate to unwind with a drink or two - so we found ourselves a table and then it was straight to the bar for refreshments.
Suitably impressed with the vast range of red wines on offer, our next major decision was just what to eat.
To keep our hunger at bay while we began to scan the huge menu up on the blackboard, we ordered a bowl of nachos to share.
Just one portion between us went a long way and they were lovely - crispy, smothered in cheese and even the
runny green guacamole that I normally avoid at all costs was delicious!
With the voice of my Weight Watchers class leader blaring loudly in my head I began scanning the menu for some healthier options for a main course and I didn't have to look very far to find one.
With prawns and scallops on a bed of sizzling vegetables I knew I couldn't go wrong!
The fish was lovely and tender and served on skewers over the hot sizzling plate.
It made a refreshing change from some of the pubs I've dined at where the only thing not likely to be mouth watering as well as stuffed with calories is a salad.
One of my friends ordered a delicious lamb dish while the other chose haddock that arrived on mash potato.
The meals were nicely presented in large white bowls. There was also a big dish of tasty fresh vegetables for the side.
So full were we that each of us struggled to finish our sumptuous dishes and it was a difficult task turning down the pleasant staff who came to our table clutching the tantalising desert board.
The Mill Arms is a beautiful 18th century country inn situated in the heart of the Test Valley countryside. It's excellent reputation sees it regularly packed and the car park at the front overflowing.
Inside the former coaching inn has retained most of its original features including flagstone floors, oak beams and large open fireplaces which give it a lovely relaxing feel.
With all this it's easy to understand why the pub, just a stones throw from the local train station, is also proving popular with wedding parties and large celebrations. It has a large inviting garden for the summer time and can also provide bed and breakfast at decent rates.
The Mill Arms Inn is in Dunbridge, near Romsey. Reservations: 01794 340 401.
