Winchester is famous for its architectural heritage-and especially for its cathedral.
But it also has some ugly edifices that should be on an "X-list" of vile buildings, according to the City of Winchester Trust.
Now the pressure group is asking residents to nominate eyesore buildings to speed up their demolition.
Pat Edwards, chairman of the trust, will show the results to George Ferguson, president of the Royal Institute of British Architects, who is guest speaker at their AGM on Tuesday, September 28th.
It was Mr Ferguson who came up with the idea of a national list of "vile buildings" which would be refused planning permission for a change of use, hopefully speeding up their demolition.
In addition, it is proposed that property developers would be encouraged to push for demolition with generous grants. Top of Mrs Edward's own X-list is the Hampshire police HQ in Romsey Road, which is currently the subject of a planning appeal.
"It is such an ugly building and it's visible for miles around," said the former Tory city councillor and planning committee chairman. "I think knocking it down would be the best solution.
"I am sure other people have their own candidates for X-listing-buildings that are horrid and not fit to be kept."
She said the competition was "a bit of fun" and the trust was not expecting immediate results, but added: "It will get people thinking about their environment and the buildings in Winchester."
* Send your nomination for X-listing to City of Winchester Trust, Winchester Heritage Centre, 32, Upper Brook Street, Winchester SO23 8DG or e-mail Secretary@cityofwinchestertrust.co.uk by Wednesday, September 22nd.
