A TEENAGE girl was the victim of a daylight sex attack just yards from her school gates in Fareham.

Now the head of Cams Hill school has issued an urgent safety warning to all of 1,000 pupils after the attack on the 15-year-old.

The assault happened as the pupil was walking home in Portchester Road when she was approached by an Asian man who asked her for directions.

He then indecently assaulted her before fleeing.

Head teacher David Wilmot is sending out a letter to all parents telling pupils to be on their guard.

He said: "This incident is uppermost in my mind. I have children myself and I want them to be safe and I want every child in this school to be safe. I'm ever mindful of the care we need to take in looking after them.

"I'm telling the youngsters that they've got to be vigilant and they've got to stick together. 99.99 per cent of the time they will have a perfectly normal safe journey home, but we need to look out for that one-off.

"We always advise children to take common sense safety measures like going home with friends and being watchful.

"The girl is shaken but fine, which is the main thing. Although incidents are rare, one is one too many and for the person it has happened to it is frightening and very worrying.

"There are a very tiny minority of very strange people out there and we as a school have to be very careful."

The school has a number of precautions in place to maintain the safety of pupils including constant CCTV recording and staff monitors with walkie talkies.

Police are appealing for help in tracking down the man, described as 5ft 11ins and of medium build.

He was wearing a patterned multi-coloured turban, a dark long-sleeved shirt and dirty blue jeans.

The man fled in a red transit type vehicle towards Portchester following the attack at about 3pm on Friday.

Police spokesman Kevin Briscoe said: "This girl was obviously very upset and we would be very keen to find anyone who may have any information."
