Winchester School of Art's MA Degree show opens on Thursday - and there are some exciting and challenging pieces on show. Kate Thompson finds out more...

A NAKED woman concealed in a wall cavity, a film installation showing eye surgery and a motorbike covered in silver glitter - yes, you've guessed it, it's the MA degree show at Winchester School of Art.

There's plenty to absorb, shock and delight at this year's exhibition of painting, printmaking, sculpture and textile design.

The standard of work is incredibly high and around every corner there is original artwork that's eye-catching and fun.

You will have to look hard to spot Kim Simons. The petite feminist artist is taking her clothes off and concealing herself in a cross-section of a room built specially for the purpose.

Check to the side and you may see her in the wall cavity or as you pass through the door and look up you could detect a beady eye watching you from the ceiling.

Kim, 23 - whose previous work has involved her being naked in a suspended bath - explained: "Both the staged observer and I are exposed.

"As quickly as I have become your observed object, you have become mine."

Yvonne Jones has been causing a stir as well with her installation featuring operations on her body. It may seem gory but it has been picked for the New Contemporaries exhibition as part of the Liverpool Biennale celebrations.

"For me this is a natural progression - I have always been interested in the human condition and the experience of being human," she said.

It's well worth checking out the textiles too as works by Emily Thompson, Sally Wright and Maria Katrachoura are exquisite.

Elsewhere in the printmaking section, the work is thought-provoking and fun.

Jason Bovington, 36, has used his close relationship with his mum as his inspiration - she is in for a shock as she has no idea she has been immortalised in litho prints.

And Arthur Hirst, 22, has used the image of a washing machine as a metaphor for the cycles of life.

Check out Laura Joy, Kate Dicker and Megan Smith too.

MA Degree Show runs at Winchester School of Art, Park Avenue from September 9 - 17. Monday - Friday 11am - 8pm, Saturday 11am - 3pm.
