SOUTHAMPTON rider Shaun Woodhouse finished second in the British Senior Individual Championships at Horspath near Oxford.

The former World Junior Champion from North Baddesley narrowly missed out on the title after a three-way run-off.

Woodhouse picked up 17 points out of a maximum 20 from his five programmed rides, including four race wins and a last in his third ride from the outside starting gate.

Also finishing on 17 points were England captain Lee Aris and current World Champion, and five times British Individual Champion Dave Hemsley.

Aris held the inside gate advantage in the final and that proved decisive.

Woodhouse, 20, had previously finished fourth in 2002 and third in 2003.

Southampton's only other representative in the 16-man final was Shaun's father, Ian Woodhouse.

The duo made cycle speedway history by becoming the first father and son to compete in the same British Senior individual final.

Ian has only returned to the sport this year after four years out suffering from a back injury.

Despite being the oldest rider in the field, Ian scored 11 points, including a race win over former World Champion Steve Harris who was riding on his home track, to finish tenth.

Fourty-eight riders attempted to qualify for the final with the qualifying rounds being staged over two days at Swindon, Newport and Southampton.

Hemsley was unbeaten around Southampton's Winchester Road track to win from Norman Venson with Shaun Woodhouse and Chris Jewes tying for third on 16 points.

Ian Woodhouse finished on 15 points and Southampton's only other rider in the field was Alan Busby, who scored 13.

On the second day of qualifying Ian Woodhouse won the Southampton round with 17 points.

Lee Galley was the only other Southampton rider drawn at home and he scored 12 points, Galley won his opening two races but finished with two last places.

Horspath also hosted the British Under-16 Individual Championship Final after Southampton and Swindon had staged two highly competitive semi-finals.

Southampton failed to produce a finalist in the junior event, Tom Colling scoring 11 points at Swindon to just miss out. Competing on their home Southampton track, Matt Grinsell, Ian Grinsell and Paul Janaway also failed to qualify.
