Bishop's Waltham Town 0, Locks Heath 1
Sydenhams Wessex League - Division 2
WALTHAM suffered their first defeat of the season on Tuesday night courtesy of a Peter Lines goal just seconds before half-time.
The Bishops had started better, with Dave Woodfine and Johnny Lewis directing the traffic in midfield. But it soon became apparent that their attack had little bite, and almost imperceptibly the tide began to turn.
Waltham's best effort was a Tef Edin rocket that was well saved by Matthew Wiltshier, but Locks Heath, with Mike Summers prominent in attack, began to test Robbie Paice more frequently.
The goal came from a throw-in on the left that was flicked on by Andrew Ricketts for Lines to blast home at the near post.
In the second half Waltham rang the changes but still made little impression on a solid visiting rearguard. Paice was still the busier of the two keepers, but Wiltshier had to be quick off his line to deny Chris Yoxall in a one-on-one with the visitors appealing in vain for offside.
In the end Locks Heath were worthy winners, and on this showing can look forward to moving up the table after getting little reward from 2003-04.
Bishop's Waltham Town 2, East Cowes Vics 2
On Saturday visitors East Cowes played much of the football, but it was Waltham who created the better chances.
The first half ended goal-less but the second was more lively with both sides battling hard.
Vics took the lead in the 65th minute after some intense pressure, but Waltham's spirit showed. Despite losing Paul Miller to injury, sub Neil Channon unleashed one of his trademark cannons to equalise from Dave Woodfine's free kick.
Soon after that Chris Yoxall was sent off for retaliation, and things got worse for Waltham when a wicked deflection put Vics ahead once more.
But ten-man Waltham rallied, and another Woodfine free-kick brought a late equaliser when Allen Miles, at full stretch, headed powerfully into the back of the net.
