A man required hospital treatment for a broken jaw after an unprovoked attack in a Winchester pub.
Police have not found a motive for the crime, which took place at around 1am on Saturday.
The victim was standing beside a fruit machine in the Savannah bar in Jewry Street when he was attacked.
The man's jaw was broken in four places after two punches were thrown. He is now recovering in Southampton General Hospital.
The victim, aged in his early 20s and from South Wonston, near Winchester, did not even see his assailant.
Constable Matthew Smith, of Winchester Police, said: "This was a vicious and apparently unprovoked attack, to which we are seeking witnesses.
"The pub would have been busy at the time of the attack and we are appealing for anyone who was in there to come forward."
