JAMES HILLIER saw his last remaining hopes of claiming the Virgin Mobile Yamaha R6 Cup go crashing at Cadwell Park on Monday.
The young Winchester rider, pictured right, needed a win to keep his Championship hopes alive, but he fell on the second lap, leaving Londoner Richard Wren to clear off for the race win and the title clincher.
The prize for winning the championship is a ride in the Virgin Mobile Yamaha team in next year's British Superbike Championship and Hillier was in the frame after some strong early season results including a win at Knockhill.
There's still work to do before the Verwood-based Rizla Crescent Suzuki team claim the Superbike title. John Reynolds' championship lead was cut to 25 points when he crashed and Honda's Michael Rutter won the first race at Cadwell.
But when Rutter wrongly gambled on wet tyres for the second race and quickly dropped out of the race, Reynolds bolstered his lead, albeit with an uninspiring eighth place. His teammate Yukio Kagayama took star billing with an emphatic victory on a track where he sustained serious injuries just a year ago.
