Sir.-I would like to draw the attention of readers to the annual reunion of the 4th (1/4th and 2/4th) and 4/5th (TA) Battalions, the Royal Hampshire Regiment.
This will take place on Saturday, September 25.
These old soldiers will happily confess to be "D-Day Dodgers", who, on D-Day in Normandy, had been in action for almost nine months since landing at Salerno in Italy on September 9, 1943.
Sadly, the spiritual home, at Newburgh House, Newburgh Street, Winchester, from which the two 4th Battallions went to war in 1939, is not available, as the present occupiers are not able to support the reunion.
So, the 58th post-war reunion is to take place at 32 Carlton Place, Southampton, at noon for lunch at 1pm, by kind permission of the Commanding Officer, Southampton University Officers' Training Corps.
In 1939 this was the headquarters of the 5th Battallion, the Hampshire Regiment, and it will be a pleasure to see Colonel Basil Gate at this reunion, who was a young officer of the 5th Battalion in 1939 and went on to command the 4th Battalion after the war.
Everyone on the mailing list has been contacted, but in case the records of the regiment are incomplete, I wanted to make sure the details are also provided here, in case there is a former member of the 1/4th, 2/4th, the 4th or 4th/5th Battalions, The Royal Hampshire Regiment, whom I have not been able to contact.
If anyone needs to find out any information about this reunion, or any veterans wish to attend, they should please write to me at 4 Cedar Wood Close, Fair Oak, Eastleigh, Hants, SO50 7LN, or telephone 023 8069 4771 and leave a message.
-I Taylor, Secretary, Royal Hampshire Regiment (TA) Bns Reunion, Winchester.
