WITH only two weeks to go until the national Dubble Bubble Bubble Blowing Contest, Southampton youngsters are getting stuck into practice.
The chewy pastime has been inflated to competition status as US company Dubble Bubble brings its national "blow off" to Woolworths, in Southampton's Above Bar, on September 11.
Scores of youngsters are expected to turn out for the city heats, where they will be given three pieces of gum and challenged to beat the bubble meter record of 18 and a half inches.
Donna Mutanha, 14, slipped in some early practice in Millbrook this week, as she chewed over her tactics for the day.
"My jaw hurts!" she said - before blowing out an eight centimetre balloon, far short of the 56cm bubblegum world record.
The competition begins at Woolworths at 11am, with six to 12-year-olds welcome to take part throughout the day.
Five local winners, chosen by an independent adjudicator, will then go up to the national final in October, with the chance of being crowned Great British Dubble Bubble Bubble Blowing Champion of 2004!
