VALLEY Park residents who went down to the woods at Zionshill Copse Local Nature Reserve for the fifth annual Community Woodfair event were sure of plenty of surprises.
For the copse - which forms part of the ancient semi-natural woodland complex which surrounds the Valley Park housing development north of Chandler's Ford - was brought to life with activities both ancient and modern.
More than 30 exhibitors demonstrated traditional woodland management techniques from days gone by, mixed in with lots of fun activities.
Coppice crafts, pole lathing, hurdle making, willow sculpting and charcoal making were also on display, while children could have a go at supervised tree climbing or making woodland creatures under the guidance of wood sculptor Andy Frost.
Organised by Test Valley Council's countryside officers, the aim of the event - which attracts more than 1,200 visitors - is to raise awareness of conservation and have a fun day out.
