Eleven-year-old John Gow showed the adults how to fish when he went afloat with members of the Southampton-based Red Deer SAC.

The trip on the Lymington boat Sundance II, skippered by Roger Bayzand, saw quality fish including a 1lb 10oz red gurnard and a 1lb 12oz grey gurnard. But the highlight was when Gow, pictured top right, heaved aboard a 22lb blonde ray - the day's best specimen and heaviest fish.

Ralph Jones also landed a nice blonde, weighing 16lb, during an action-packed trip.

On the freelance front, Paul Greenarce from Tiptoe sampled excellent action over the Dolphin Sands, where he caught the 10lb 2oz turbot pictured right. Fishing from a friend's boat, Don't Panic, Paul used a fillet of mackerel to tempt theunusual visitor to the area.

The eighth round of the Isac Open Pegged League at Cogden attracted 80 competitors, local anglers continuing to figure in the leader table.

Fish were not numerous but there were quality ones, Kevin Painter from Fareham landing a superb 2lb 11.25oz specimen sole and Chris Equall a sole of 2lb 2oz.

Colin Richards has 39, Ian Golds from Portsmouth and Tony Burton 46 and Lee Cullen from Netley 47. Next pegged open series match is on Saturday at Abbotsbury (fishing from 7pm-midnight). Doggies, pout and scad will supply most action but the odd smoothhound should figure. Tickets (£15) are pre-book (Trevor Sutch has details).
