NELSON Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment, Harold Wilson was elected Prime Minister and the Beatles released I Want To Hold Your Hand, their first hit in America.
In 1964, a year of historic moments, one slipped under the radar of most: Brian Ward joining the Testwood Motor Company. Now group parts manager, Brian is celebrating 40 years with the motor group this month.
Despite the passing of the years, the 57-year-old says little has changed.
"We're still driving on four wheels and steering with one, and people seem to be driving in a similar way to that in the past," he said. "I do believe, however, that demands are higher and customers expect things a lot faster. Obviously we're now
enjoying the efficiency of computers as opposed to paper filing."
Brian, a keen Saints fan and coarse fisherman, says he has no regrets.
"I look at it as my own company now and feel very much my own boss. I'm given as much responsibility as I want and, best of all, I feel I am controlling my own destiny with all the freedom I'm given."
Ed Oakley, managing director of Testwood Motor Group, said: "Brian is a great representative of the spirit and values of the company. Coupled with the expertise his long service brings, he is a valuable team member."
In recognition of his loyalty and his achievements, Testwood are sending him away for a weekend of luxury at Hampshire's Chewton Glen country house hotel.
