STEVE WIGLEY was refusing to answer questions about his own position - but has dismissed any suggestion of Saints being a club in crisis.
A new appointment is expected to be made shortly, but whether someone will come in alongside, above or below Wigley remains unknown.
It seems certain that he will retain the title of head coach, but his precise responsibilities in the future have not yet been clarified.
There is speculation surrounding a possible director of football role, with one possible contender - Gerard Houllier - at Stamford Bridge on Saturday working for French television.
But Wigley was giving nothing away following the 2-1 defeat.
"I want to talk about the Chelsea game, I don't want to talk about myself," he said.
"There has been enough said by different people and I'm just preparing the team for Charlton from here on in.
"I'm the head coach and that is the end of the story.
"The commitment from the players was very good. There is nothing wrong at this football club and there won't be in the future."
With two weeks now until the next game against Charlton at The Valley in front of the live Sky cameras on Monday September 13, Wigley is looking forward to stepping out of the spotlight and concentrating on coaching his players.
"It's been a strange week," he said.
"I seem to have spent more time in front of a microphone or camera than I have on the training ground.
"That's been compounded by events obviously from last weekend, but also because there was a midweek game.
"I'm looking forward to next week, getting on the training ground."
Of the game, Wigely admitted the loss of Fabrice Fernandes on 24 minutes with a hamstring injury was a factor as his side struggled to keep hold of the ball.
"Losing Fabrice Fernandes was a big blow, because there is no two ways about it, he has been our best player for the four games," he said.
"What he did do was tie Bridgey (Wayne Bridge) up and he is also someone who is able to hold on to the ball and give us time toget up the pitch.
"We have passed the ball better, but what has let us down is our entry into the final third.
"Our final ball into the box just didn't threaten enough."
