A MAN is fighting for his life after being stabbed in the back in Southampton.
The 34-year-old man is said to be in a critical condition at Southampton General Hospital where he was taken by ambulance following the attack.
Police were called to a disturbance in Lyon Street just after midnight on Saturday night involving a group of around ten people.
When they arrived at the scene the victim was found with serious head injuries and a stab wound to his back which required emergency surgery.
The victim's 30-year-old brother was also injured in the attack and was taken to hospital, but later released.
Det Insp Paul Barton of Southampton CID said: "This is an extremely serious assault which has left one man fighting for his life.
"We are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed this attack.
"As this was a Saturday night in Southampton we feel sure a number of people would have been in the area at the time. They may have either witnessed the assault or have seen a large group running away afterwards.
"We will be making house to house enquiries in the area and examining closed circuit TV."
Police believe the group responsible may have run through the grounds of the Royal South Hants Hospital. It is thought there may have been an earlier altercation in St Mary Street outside the Kingsland Tavern around 11.30pm involving the same group.
Police are also keen to hear from any witnesses to that incident.
Anyone with any information is urged to call Southampton CID on 0845 045 45 45 or the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
