IT'S another example of a small amount of money making a big difference to many people.

This social club for elderly people in Gosport is £200 better off thanks to our latest Make it Happen award.

Three months ago we teamed up with Combined Insurance, which operates throughout the UK, to offer Daily Echo readers the opportunity to apply for a share of £10,000.

Hundreds of readers applied for cash in the Daily Echo Combined Insurance Make it Happen Award scheme and all of them suggested great ways to improve their communities.

One of those readers was John Rogers, chairman of the Gosport Young at Heart Unity Club. The club meets once a week at the Club Hants Centre in Gosport and has more than 80 members.

John, 75, from Alverstoke, plans to spend the cash on a new hi-fi system for the club.

He said: "A trip out to the club is sometimes the only day some of our members leave the house. It gives them the opportunity to have a cup of tea together, enjoy entertainment, have a chat and a laugh and keep up to date with new legislation that might affect them.

"I keep up to date with any changes in law that might concern them, for example the recent pension changes.

"This money and the hi-fi we will be able to buy won't just mean a lot to our members but to all the other groups who use the hall.

"At the moment we've only got a crackly old hi-fi. Now we can have good music for dancing."

It's still not too late to apply to be included in the scheme. Simply fill in the form.
