RUMOURS that Union Street is closed while a new roof is installed have been firmly scotched by traders in the area.

Despite a manifestation of scaffolding around the shops off the town centre, all the Union Street stores are open as normal.

"Someone at the bus stop told me they thought Union Street was closed, so we want to let the public know that there's still access up here and we are still functioning," said Susan Bennett, proprietor of Dawkins Pet Supplies.

The Union Street building works are being carried out by Southampton contractors Pro-fix Access for Test Valley Borough Council.

Once completed in the autumn, Union Street will have a new canopy, improved signage and an enhanced garden area to make it a more attractive environment.

Although traders are anxious for the work to be completed, they appreciate the inconvenience they are experiencing will eventually benefit them.

John Eadie Ltd employee Steve Brown said: "The work does seem to be dragging on, but it will be good when its finished.

"It has affected our business because the summer period is normally our busiest time with people going fishing - and we rely on the trade."

The council has displayed two notices at the East Street entrance and George Yard entrance to Union Street explaining that business is operating as usual during the enhancement scheme.

A council spokeswoman said: "The council is offering support to businesses with their applications for a reduction in business rates if they have been adversely affected while the work is in progress. We are confident that visitors and businesses alike will see real benefits when the enhancements are complete."
