Award-winning Chesil theatre, Winchester, launches its new season this week promising a strong mix of hilarious comedy, contemporary drama and classic satire in its 2004/2005 line-up.
The new season of six plays, which runs from October 2004 through to July 2005, opens with The Day After the Fair by Frank Harvey, based on a Thomas Hardy short story.
Set in late 19th century Wessex, the play tells the story of an illiterate servant girl who, after meeting an attractive stranger, persuades her mistress to write romantic letters on her behalf.
The play runs from October 11 to 16. From December 6 to 11, it's a case of 'I shall say this only once,' as seasonal delight comes in the form of 'Allo 'Allo. Written by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft and directed by Gary Nicholson, this hilarious comedy is based on the popular television series about the French Resistance.
Looking ahead to next year, playing from February 7 to 12 is Skylight by David Hare. From the foremost political playwright of the late 20th century, personal ethics and ideologies collide in an intense emotional duel, played against the background of post-Thatcherite London.
Next up is Arms and the Man by Bernard Shaw, which runs from April 4 to 9. Directed by Caroline Helcke, this classic satire highlights the illusions of war, romance and class. Running from May 23 to 28 is The Odd Couple (female version) by Neil Simon, directed by Martin Humphrey.
For the final production of the season, Chesil Theatre presents Shadowlands by William Nicholson.
Running from July 18 to 23, this award-winning play tells the poignant love story of Oxford don and children's author C S Lewis, and American poet Joy Davidman. A true story retold in a beautiful and powerful play.
Plays start at 7.45pm unless otherwise advised with tickets £8.50 from the Chesil box office on 01962 877977. All Monday night tickets are reduced.
