Otterbourne 1, Netley Central Sp 1
A HEADER from ex-Eastleigh midfielder Gareth Mead sufficed to separate two well-matched teams at Oakwood Road on Tuesday night.
But even Mead's goal was only just allowed to count in a game that had 'nil-nil draw' written all over it from virtually the first whistle.
When Mead rose above a forest of heads to nod home a 77th-minute free-kick, the linesman's flag was waving. But after a long discussion between referee and linesman, the goal was allowed to stand.
Virtually the only action of note in the first half took place in the third minute - Netley defender Jordan Nichols aggravated a knee injury and had to be helped from the field.
That's as good as it got on a largely uninspiring evening. The goal apart, the honours were taken by defenders. Netley centre-backs Aaron Vine and Ben Calder marshalled Otters strikers James Bedford and Steve Trott with ease, while at the other end Otterbourne keeper Dan Chapman impressed with his bravery and safe handling.
Netley sub Matthew Searles was the liveliest attacker on view.
Otterbourne 0, Tadley Calleva 2
Otters' first home game of the season, on Saturday, ended in disappointment for the hosts.
The crucial turning point came five minutes after the break with the game still goal-less. The Tadley manager was red-carder after Andy Samuels appeared to take a kick in the face while lying on the ground, but Otters were unsettled by the incident.
Tadley responded much better, scoring two goals to decide the match and leave the home side scratching their heads in disbelief.
