Two teenagers stole cash and jewellery after tricking their way into a pensioner's home.

It happened at Park Road, Winchester, on Friday when the woman, who is in her eighties, opened her door to a ponytailed girl who asked to borrow a pen and paper.

While the woman went to look for the items, an accomplice slipped into the house, went upstairs and searched a number of rooms, pocketing cash, bankbooks and jewellery.

The incident has prompted police to repeat a warning to the elderly to take extra care.

"Most people who call at your home are genuine callers. However, sometimes people turn up unannounced, with the intention of tricking their way in," said crime reduction officer, Jim Ingram.

"Official visitors will have a scheduled appointment, carry identification and will not mind you checking with their company before you let them in. "Remember, if in doubt, keep them out and call the police immediately."

The thief is described as white, 17 or 18, 5ft 10ins, 6ft, of slim build, with a clean-shaven fair complexion and light blond, short hair, swept off his face. He was well spoken, with a Hampshire accent and he was wearing a light grey tracksuit with a zip-up top and white trainers.

His accomplice is described as white, aged around 15, of slim build, around 4ft, with a fair complexion and dark brown straight hair parted in the centre and tied in a ponytail. She had dark eyes and a slight Irish accent and was wearing white trainers and a navy-blue tracksuit with white writing across the chest.
