SIX thousands randomly selected households in Fareham are to be surveyed in the latest attempt to solve the borough's affordable housing crisis.
Fareham Borough Council say the lack of affordable housing is one of the most pressing issues facing local people.
They have set an ambitious target to add at least 100 homes each year to the housing stock in the hope of meeting an escalating need especially among young people.
Executive member for housing, Ernest Crouch, said: "If we are to achieve this target we need local people to tell us realistically of their present and future housing expectations so that we can negotiate with private developers to help provide these much-needed homes.
"We must determine planning policies that require affordable housing to be built to ensure there is adequate provision for local people to rent or buy according to their financial means.
"We are particularly keen to do more to help young people who want to set up home in Fareham."
A questionnaire is being sent to the households. It will include homeowners, people who rent privately and tenants of the council and housing associations.
It is designed to build a comprehensive picture of both current and future housing needs within Fareham. The council is urging people to respond to the survey.
Councillor Crouch added: "What local people have to say is extremely relevant and will assist the council as it shapes its long-erm housing strategy and planning policy."
The questionnaires which are confidential should be returned by September 7.
