THE third Basingstoke Open Junior Tournament at Totally Tennis brought together some of the South's best players.

Entries for the boys' events were a record high at 60 but, disappointingly, only 10 girls entered.

In the boys' under-10 singles, Alex Gasson beat Cameron Wicks 6-1, 6-3.

However, Wicks was successful in the under-13 doubles with partner Chris Harris.

They won their final against Rupert Bayham and Christian Portz 6-4, 6-3.

Ben Jubin, a champion at the Newbury Open a week earlier, added the under-13 singles trophy to his ever-growing collection by defeating Liam Nutley 6-1, 6-0.

Matthew Church was also looking for a second trophy after his win at Newbury.

But, after a tremendous effort, in which he won the second set convincingly, he lost 1-6, 6-0, 6-7 to Alexander Kamieniecki.

Kamieniecki also won the under-17 title.

Undeterred, Church teamed up with James Stewart in an all-Totally Tennis final. They beat team-mates James Deag and Andrew Osgerby 6-0, 7-6.

In the girls' events, Totally Tennis had great success. Stephanie Catlin continued her success of the summer, winning the under-13 title from Dorset's Holly Nicholson 7-6, 6-1.

Catlin then teamed up with Dominique Gilbert in an under-13 doubles final to beat Megan Cunningham and Danielle Ladden 6-3, 6-1.

Totally Tennis player Charlotte Elvidge beat fellow Team Squad player Vicky Lopes in the under-15 singles final 6-2, 7-5.

Tennis director Nigel Long said: "The tournament has shown what a wealth of talent we have in this region and there was some fantastic tennis played throughout the week.

"We have seen some excellent matches.

"Some were hard fought, going to three sets, and, considering the age of some of the players, I was most impressed with the sportsmanship of all the competitors."
