WILLIAMS shipping, the port of Southampton's long-established family business, has launched a major expansion programme by combining forces with the Milford Docks Company in South Wales.
The two operations have signed a joint-venture agreement that will generate many chances to develop new opportunities within the marine and port services sector.
Based in Pembroke Port the new company, to be called Williams Marine and Port Services Limited, will provide a range of services to shipping and terminal operators in the Milford Haven waterway and throughout South Wales.
The company has been formed by bringing together the assets and business of Marine and Port Services, a trading division of the Milford Docks Company, with the operational management and experience of Williams Shipping.
Colin Williams, joint managing director of Williams Shipping, said: "Discussions between the two companies have been progressing over the last six months and we are delighted that we have reached agreement, which helps secure the future of our two businesses in a very competitive and fast-moving market.''
The Southampton company was established in 1894 and provides marine services... including bunkering, hire and charter of tugs and launches, as well as operating one of the country's largest fleets of flat-top barges and pontoons, to the port of Southampton.
Andrew Brown of the Milford Docks Company said: "This new venture brings together local knowledge and experience as well as the professional expertise and wider industry recognition of Williams Shipping.
"Together we will be able to respond more efficiently to a range of new business opportunities.''
Under the agreement, workboat, tug, ship supply and services will be provided to the expanding shipping activity in Milford Haven, Wales's largest port, and provide a base for expansion throughout the region.
