TEN young apprentices have started out in the world of work with a personal welcome from Southampton City Council's chief executive.
Brad Roynon met all the youngsters, aged between 16 and 20, who will work in the council's housing services department.
They will carry out repairs and maintenance tasks in council housing properties and other council-owned buildings.
While gaining on-the-job experience they will train to become professional electricians, bricklayers, carpenters, decorators and gas engineers.
The young apprentices will study on a day or block release at local technology colleges.
Praising the scheme, Mr Roynon said:
"It enables young people to gain practical experience, earn a wage and learn the skills of their trade on the job, at the same time as working towards a professional qualification."
