Fareham Council bosses want people to get out of their armchairs, switch off the TV and get some fresh air.
The Walking to Health campaign features a series of walks, each led by a trained volunteer, along a variety of different local routes.
They will be held on different days and will vary in time and distance, making it suitable for both beginners and the more experienced walkers.
The campaign is being jointly funded by the council and Fareham and Gosport Primary Care Trust.
Representatives from both bodies joined Fareham's mayor, Cllr David Swanbrow, at the official launch last Thursday.
They enjoyed a short walk around Holly Hill Woodland Park.
Cllr Brian Bayford, executive member for health and environment, said: "We all know how important it is to lead an active lifestyle.
Walking with a group can help you get fit while enjoying company and some lovely scenery around the borough."

The campaign needs more walk leaders. If you are interested, call the number above.
