LUDGERSHALL in Bloom has flowered in its first year after people in the village nominated 55 entries in the competition, which grew out of a similar competition in Tidworth.

The scheme is designed to raise the profile of the many, very well tended gardens in Ludgershall and to encourage a blossoming of pride in the historic village.

"The gardens, tubs and baskets were of a very high standard, although the team noted that some outstanding gardens had not been nominated," said organiser Mike Winterbourne, a community development worker with the Tidworth Development Trust.

The team of adjudicators had much ground to cover when they undertook the judging on 21 July and some difficult decisions to make.

But finally they chose the garden of Bill and Betty Markwood in Biddesden Lane as the best in the village with Joy Smith, of Old Common Way, taking first prize in the tubs and basket category.

A get together and prize giving is being arranged for September.
