FIRST-TIME visitors to Kama - one of the best of Southampton's latest crop of Indian restaurants - could be forgiven for wondering what to expect.

With a name directly alluding to ancient Indian sex manual the Kama Sutra and a slogan, "Feel the passion", to match - not to mention indoor wall decorations depicting a loving couple in various (tasteful) stages of love-making - prospective diners are seemingly tantalised with a wider array of sensual delights than is usual for a city centre eaterie.

Fortunately for those of a nervous disposition, the only spicy thing about Kama is the food. The waiting staff do not try to arouse your passion with knowing winks or suggest that you do anything with your food other than eat it.

But what it (thankfully) lacks in eroticism it more than makes up in the way of culinary arts.

Traditional and modern are perfectly balanced on Kama's menu with tried-and-tested favourites sitting happily alongside new and exciting dishes.

To start with I had the paneer pakora - small chunks of Indian cottage cheese fried in a spiced batter - while my ever-adventurous friend opted for the aloo pakora - potato pieces similarly fried. We both enjoyed our starters although my friend said her batter was a little on the thin side.

Our main courses, however, lived entirely up to expectation. We both went for a new addition to the Kama menu, a potato and aubergine curry called the aloo bengan. I had mine with pilau rice and a side order of traditional naan, while my companion chose the garlic rice.

The aloo bengan featured a subtle blend of tastes and textures and now ranks alongside the saag paneer as my favourite Kama dish. My friend was just as pleased, and was particularly happy that the aubergine wasn't too greasy (the ultimate accolade from this hard-to-please girl).

Even if you already have a favourite Indian restaurant in Southampton, Kama is well worth a visit.

I've eaten there several times since it first opened just over a year ago and have always come away with that warm, satisfied glow that comes from eating a well-cooked meal with good company and in pleasant surroundings.

Passion or not, you've got to love Kama.
