TROJANS are on the brink of a memorable English Hockey League championship triumph.

A 2-0 win over Harleston Magpies means they need only draw their final match at bottom-of-the-table Bradford Newts on Saturday week, April 6, to be certain of winning the Division 1 title.

Only a major upset in West Yorkshire and victory for second-placed Wimbledon at Harleston that afternoon can halt the Trojans celebrations.

"It promises to be an open game, because Bradford have got to win to stand any chance of finishing bottom - and being relegated," explained Trojans coach Louise Carter.

"The fact that Bradford have to come out and play will suit us down to the ground."

Trojans will go into their finale three points ahead of the Dons, who trounced Hounslow & Ealing 4-1.

And, significantly, four points clear of Loughborough Students, who tumbled clean out of the title race after losing 1-0 at home to Liverpool Quilter.

Loughborough had been a popular bet for the title since the start of the season, but they have faltered badly in recent weeks.

Any nerves that Trojans harboured were brushed aside in the opening minutes against Harleston, with Tamsin Pascoe firing the Stoneham girls ahead from the penalty spot after Laura Hudson had been illegally tackled in front of the posts.

It was pretty much statemate until midway into the second-half when a goalmouth scramble led to Laura Hudson scoring a second, points clinching goal.

"It wasn't the prettiest we've played this season," Carter confessed.

"But the three points objective was achieved and now we have something special to look forward to in ten days time - although Bradford will be a rather weird place to do our celebrating !"

Southampton rounded off a promising season in South League Division 1 by beating West Witney 3-1 to finish in a pleasing fourth slot.
