SOUTHAMPTON residents will be given another chance to have their say on the future of the former Vosper Thornycroft shipyard in Woolston.

City chiefs are set to unveil the final plans for the redevelopment of the site following extensive consultations with the local community.

Next Monday people will be able to air their views at the city council cabinet meeting.

The 31-acre site - renamed Woolston Riverside - is being redeveloped by Lord Rogers and his firm the Richard Rogers Partnership.

He has been the mastermind behind such flagship buildings as Paris's Pompidou Centre and London's controversial Millennium Dome.

The South East England Development Agency snapped up the historic site in a £15m deal when Vosper Thornycroft moved to Portsmouth earlier this year.

Plans for the area include a mix of housing and industry, with up to 1,500 homes being built there.

Experts believe that about 40 per cent of the plot will be taken up with maritime industry, which is keen to take advantage of the old VT deep water quay. There will be public space at the heart of the development, waterfront access for the first time in 100 years and green areas scattered throughout.

City council leader Councillor Adrian Vinson said that when the master plan for the site was eventually approved in September, it would provide a blueprint for the sort of developments the council would allow on the site.

"We are seeking to create a significant number of new jobs and make a substantial contribution to the city's housing needs," he said.

"And to provide waterfront views and waterfront access in a part of the city that has been behind walls for a century."

The item will be discussed at the Cabinet meeting on Monday.
