TEAM SOLENT'S Tommy Davies has bounced back from the disappointment of the AAA Under-20 Championships to lift the South of England under-20 3,000 metres title at Bedford.

The 18-year-old Loughborough University student from Romsey unexpectedly flopped at last month's AAAs where he finished eighth in the 5,000m in a slower time than last year.

But his rosy early-season form blossomed again at Bedford where he beat a high-class field, including Matt Barnes-Smith of Suffolk and Craig Ivemy from Sussex, who were first and second respectively in the English Schools' senior 3,000m.

Dad Keith reported: "Tommy was the fastest athlete in the field on paper but, as we know from the AAA 5,000m, this can count for nothing on the day. It was a comparatively slow and tactical race, but Tommy ran away from the field over the last 600 metres to take the gold medal."
