ISLE OF WIGHT heptathlete Kelly Sotherton has one last stop-off in Britain before jetting out to the Olympics Games in Athens.

The 27-year-old Newport-born all-rounder will be putting the finishing touches to her long jump at Friday's Norwich Union London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace.

Sotherton concentrated on a trio of other disciplines at last Sunday's three-event challenge in Birmingham. She won the high jump with a 1.76-metre leap, the 100 metres hurdles in 13.62 seconds, guaranteeing her overall glory, but she was fourth in her problem event, the javelin, with a throw of 35.27.

Sotherton, a training partner of Olympic champion Denise Lewis, was critical of her own performance.

She said: "There was a great crowd, which always helps, but I obviously have not listened to all the advice Denise Lewis has given me because I didn't use any of it! I did okay, but I was a bit under par and felt a bit lacklustre.

"I think I expected too much from myself, which put me under too much pressure, but I got through it, so that's okay.

"I am disappointed with my javelin. I have thrown five metres further than that, but the javelin is only one event in seven.

"I am learning so many new things, so it's hard for me to put it all together."

Southampton University student Robert Tobin was seventh in the 400 metres at Birmingham, in 46.88sec.
