EASTLEIGH Rail twosome George Werrin and Bill Newman tackled opponents above the normal level associated with the Kestrel Guards Southampton Open tournament.

In the pairs they faced the father and son combination of Peter and Keith Le Long - two members of the Jersey team that had reached the final of the British Isles triples championship. The Channel Islanders strode through 31-12.

Hants Police duo Ray Cartwright and Ken Marsh also fell to Jersey opponents in David Bowyer and Chris Andrews by 20-8, while in an all-Hampshire clash Denny Graydon (Fleming Park) and Sports Centre's Colin Thresher sank Norman Woodford and Peter Burton (County) 27-10.

The new ladies' pairs event has attracted 30 entries and Banister Park's Joan Ryan and Midge Pitter made early progress by overcoming Anne Pearce and Wendy Line (Atherley) 22-16.

Tournament finals are at Atherley on Saturday.
