DRIVERS coming into Southampton beware.

From today, motorists breaking the 30mph limit across the Millbrook flyover heading into the city along Mountbatten Way could face fines and penalty points on their licences if they do not drop their speed.

Bosses at the Safety Camera Partnership for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are introducing the tough new restrictions after complaints from contractors carrying out repairs to the flyover that many drivers flout the 30mph speed limit introduced in June this year.

Today, a van from the Road Safety Partnership will be monitoring the flyover's western and eastern ends using hi-tech mobile speed cameras. Drivers have been warned they could be fined £60 and have three penalty points added to their licenCe if they break the law.

Safety Camera Partnership spokesman Julian Hewitt said: "Contractors are having to work within feet of the traffic and this can be very dangerous. After evaluating the enhanced risk to drivers and workers the partnership has agreed to enforce the temporary speed limit along this stretch of road for the duration of the road works. Both the speed limit and the fact that the road is protected by speed cameras is clearly signed so motorists will have no excuse if they are caught speeding."

Work began on the maintenance programme on the Millbrook Flyover on June 21 and is scheduled to take six months to complete.
