NEXT time you visit Beaulieu, don't be surprised if you bump into the world's most famous fictional detective.

Sherlock Holmes and his faithful companion, Dr Watson, will be roaming the grounds of Palace House as part of the estate's forthcoming series of Victorian Soirees.

Visitors are being invited to indulge their senses from Wednesday, August 4, as the first of six nostalgic summer evenings gets under way.

You can drift into the historic Abbey Cloister, where the haunting sounds of the French flautist Yves Bouvy can be heard, and listen to the favourite musical standards of a bygone age as Beaulieu Brass Band plays on the lawn of Palace House.

Alternatively, you can retire to the house where Kirsty Purviss will be playing the piano as the Victorian maids chatter about life as servants in the big house.

A range of drinks and hot and cold food will be on offer, but if you prefer you can bring a picnic and dine al fresco.

Other attractions include the gardens, the Mill Pond Walk and the exhibition of monastic figures created by sculptor Philip Jackson.

For tickets and information about the Victorian Soirees, which run on August 4, 5, 12, 13, 18 and 19, call 01590 612345.
