The downside of Team Solent's latest UK Young Athletes' League sortie into Sussex was that lack of girls cost them a possible third place.

The upside was that the boys came away from Brighton clutching two man-of-the-match awards.

Under-15 sprinter Jordan Abrahams was the track hero, clocking an excellent Grade 1 time of 23.5 seconds to win the 200m.

Field-wise, the day belonged to Sam Spreadbury who, in addition to winning the high jump and javelin, conjured up an excellent long jump win of 5.49 metres.

Despite those efforts, Solent find themselves in the drop zone of the Southern Division 1 West, but team manager Terese Swain is determined to fight on.

She said: "We're very strong at under-15 and under-17 boys' level and if we can get the athletes out in other age-groups for the last match at Worthing on August 1, we will hopefully just avoid the drop."
