AS a father and son today begin life sentences for the murder of Southampton mum Belinda Gibson, one question remains: Where is her body?

Detectives who investigated Belinda's disappearance appealed for Leslie and David Gibson to finally admit where they disposed of her body for the sake of her family.

Both were found guilty of murdering 32-year-old Belinda at her home in Purvis Gardens, Sholing, in February 2002, following a six-week trial at Winchester Crown Court, as reported in a special late edition of the Daily Echo yesterday.

Jurors heard how the pair had smothered the mother-of-five as her children slept upstairs.

They then stripped her body and stored it in the garden shed before throwing it in Southampton Water, weighed down with a heavy concrete block.

Today police called on the father and son to show some remorse and tell them where in the sea they disposed of Belinda's body.

Det Chief Insp Bob Duncan, who led the murder inquiry codenamed Operation Asgard, said: "The saddest aspect of this case is that five children are now left without a mother. This verdict will help bring a degree of closure for Belinda's family, but the one thing which would complete this for them is for her body to be found so she can finally be laid to rest.

"We hope that David and Leslie show some remorse, think of those five children, and help us to identify where we will find her body."

Last night Belinda's family said they supported the Hampshire police appeal.

In a statement, Belinda's mother Gloria Dunn, 53, who had sat in the public gallery for much of the trial, said: "Belinda really deserved more from her short life, but at least we can now say we have justice for her.

"Now that the verdict of this case is known, Belinda's family wishes to be left alone and to be given time and space to put back together the lives which have been destroyed for the past two and a half years."

Paying tribute to the team of detectives who worked on the murder investigation, Mrs Dunn, of West End, said: "Without the officers of Hampshire Constabulary, this case would never have been solved and justice for my daughter given."

Belinda's sister Donna Gough, 31, made an emotional address to waiting camera crews before being led away in tears.

She said: "I just want to say that we are all pleased with the outcome today. We have got justice for my sister. It has been a very hard two and a half years, but she will never be forgotten."

As reported in a special late edition of yesterday's Daily Echo, the jury of eight men and four women took four hours to return guilty verdicts on both David, 33, and his father Leslie, 66.

Mr Justice Silber sentenced both to life imprisonment but adjourned

setting the minimum period they will serve until Wednesday.

He told them: "You have been

convicted of the very carefully planned and callous murder of Belinda Gibson.

"I pass on both of you the mandatory sentence of life imprisonment. As I have indicated, I will postpone

consideration of the minimum period which you will serve until next week."

There was a loud cheer of "Yes!" from the public gallery as the unanimous guilty verdicts were returned yesterday afternoon.

Martial arts instructor David Gibson, who had repeatedly claimed Belinda had left the family home for a break, still protested his innocence, saying: "I did not kill my wife. I'm not having this."

Leslie Gibson, a retired dock worker who had held Belinda down while his son smothered her, looked shocked and had to be helped back into his seat.

As he was led to the cells, he turned back and made a two-fingered V-sign at police officers sitting in court.

Mr Justice Silber paid tribute to the team of detectives who had worked on the long and difficult murder inquiry, saying: "They have performed a difficult task with commendable skill and care."
