HAMPSHIRE Hawks' winning streak in the Twenty20 Cup came to an abrupt end on Monday night as they were crushed by nine wickets by Lancashire Lightning in the quarter-final.

It meant the red rose county continued their hold over their south coast rivals this season, recording their third one-day win.

The visitors to the Rose Bowl on Monday night won the toss and put Hampshire in to bat, who had Shane Warne back as captain.

He decided to put himself in at number three and was soon in action as opener Shaun Udal was dismissed for five after just six balls.

The Australian spin king's stay at the crease was just as short as he failed to score, and when John Crawley (5) departed, the Hawks were in trouble at 21-3.

Michael Clarke (36) and Dimitri Mascarenhas (33 not out) restored some respectability to the scoreline, with Nic Pothas (10) the only other player to make it into double figures in a final total of 120-9.

To stand any chance of winning, Hampshire needed to take early wickets, but that never happened as Mal Loye and Steven Crook (27) put on 56 for the first wicket.

That proved to be the home side's only success as Loye steered his side to victory with a 64 not out from 56 balls and Mark Chilton was unbeaten on 23.

Lancashire will now play holders Surrey in the semi-finals, while Leicestershire take on Glamorgan.

The semi-finals and final will be played at Edgbaston on August 8.

The previous day, the Hawks lost by five wickets in the totesport League to the visiting Northamptonshire Steelbacks.

The home side were bowled out for 153, with Greg Lamb top-scoring with 32, while Mascarenhas (24) and Clarke (21) also chipped in.

David Sales led the visitors' reply with 63 as they won with five balls to spare.

The Hawks had better luck on Tuesday night as they beat Kent Spitfires by 22 runs thanks to another fine innings from Mascarenhas, as he scored 79 of Hampshire's 146 total.

In reply, Kent were bowled out for 124 runs as Warne took 3-24 and Mascarenhas 1-13 from 5.4 overs.
