AIDS orphans and poverty-stricken children are set to benefit from one of the most valuable gifts Winton School pupils could ever give them - the gift of education.

Winton's large-scale Adom project to build a school for Ghanian children now has a visible presence in an African country worlds apart from Andover.

Recent weeks have seen the foundations of the school laid, thanks to £5,000 from the last round of fundraising by Winton's pupils and supporters.

The Adom project should turn a dream into reality for Winton maths teacher Peter Donkor, who hails from Ghana, and plans to return to his homeland to run the school.

The latest photographs were taken by Mr Donkor's wife and provide an exciting glimpse of the school taking shape. Winton School faces a huge challenge next year as it attempts to raise £15,000 to complete the building.

The completed school, expected to be called Winton School Ghana, will boast three classrooms, a computer room and a dining room with space for a football pitch and further extensions.

"It's a very exciting time for the project and I'm so im-pressed by the support that the school, the headteacher and the community have shown it," Mr Donkor said.
