WHILE the weather has yet to reach its summer peak the comparative absence of sunshine and heat hasn't stopped that other summer favourite - the country fete.

The weekend was probably the busiest of the year for fetes because the summer term is about to finish and that means many people depart for the summer holidays.

Garden produce in the form of soft fruits and flowers are also in their prime at this time of year making up the core ingredients for many such shows.

One longstanding successful event is the Hurstbourne Tarrant Flower Show held in the recreation ground on Saturday.

Once again this year the show included a dog show, pony rides and traditional fete side-shows.

Music was provided by the Hannington Silver Band.

Competition was keen as ever in the flower show categories with many outstanding entries from some of the beautiful gardens in this particularly attractive village.

Traditionally the profits from the show goes to the flower club with donations made to a variety of village groups.

In Andover the St Mary's Church fete was opened by local MP Sir George Young.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Test Valley, Cllr Neville Whiteley and Mrs Janet Whiteley, accompanied by the vicar, The Rev David Williams, enjoyed the many stalls manned by members of the choir, church wardens and members of the congregation.

Members of St John Ambulance were in attendance but to help ensure extra safety and security the Rev John Aston tested the bouncy castle before the show opened!

Proceeds from this fete go towards church funds.
