DRIVERS into Winchester can expect major disruption on one of the main routes into the city from next week.

Safety works on St Cross Tunnel Bridge will begin on Monday and last for about 13 weeks.

The work coincides with disruption on Bar End Road, another major route into the city.

Building work there has forced the closure of one lane and the traffic is being controlled by lights.

However, the roadworks are taking place in the summer when traffic flows into Winchester are considerably lighter than during the school terms.

At St Cross, Hampshire County Council is installing safety fencing over the bridge in front of the existing parapets together with a minor realignment of the carriageway and eastern footway.

During construction, there will be lane closures and the continuous use of traffic lights.

Access for pedestrians will continue throughout and access to properties along St Cross Road will be maintained at all times.

Work has been scheduled to begin with the school summer

holidays and during the summer months to make best use of good weather and longer daylight hours.

County council executive member for environment Keith Estlin said: "This is essential work to improve the safety of St Cross Tunnel Bridge. Please bear with us while these improvements are being made, and remember that it will take longer to complete your journeys due to the temporary traffic signals."
